A Whole Lot Of Nothing

Taking the I-5 the drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco is incredibly long and incredibly boring, and it seems endless because there is nothing to see between the two cities. Well, if you like to watch endless fields of farmland pass you by, then sure, there’s plenty to see. There’s some hillside action going on when you get closer to San Francisco, and then there’s the windmill fields towards the end of the trip. The real exciting part happens when you get your first glimpse of San Francisco just as you’re crossing the bay. That’s when the giddiness grabs you. Cause you’ve made it! You’re in San Francisco!

Unless you’re in a hurry, and flying is out of the question, I strongly recommend taking the scenic route between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Highway 1 has some incredible vistas, and there are a lot of places to stop on the way up or down like Santa Barbara, San Jose, Santa Cruz and Monterey. If you’re inclined to rough it for a night or two, there are places to camp on Highway 1 as well as plenty of places to do some serious hiking.
